MYTHOGRAPHY COMICS PERFORMANCE ART VIDEO EVENT AT EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO
December 19, 2015 (4 Videos)
Awutok-thon, El Vejigante-Luchador and his nemesis, The Doktor "Cuervo" from Mythography Comics (played by Abu Joseph Hasan Falero and Jorel Lonesome) go to El Museo del Barrio for the Super Sabado Festivities: Parranda!. Watch as exhibiting artist Rodriguez Calero saves us from getting kicked out of the museum. Thanks again Roca! Watch us dance in the Parranda led by Jose Ortiz aka "Dr. Drum" of Bomba Yo and say hello to PRIDA Artisans at the Art market. And watch as El Vejigante-Luchador meets New York City Council Speaker Ms. Melissa Mark-Viverito for an important message. Special Thanks to Marcos Dimas and Jay Muñiz at Taller Boricua gallery for allowing us use of their space in preparation for this video. And, of course, thank you to El Museo del Barrio for...well, for being a museum in the barrio.

The "Origins" of El Vejigante-Luchador

“QUERIDO FBI” by Residente Calle 13, An “Un-authorized” Mock Music Video by Miguelangel Ruiz
File Size: 6.4MB (3 minutes 49 seconds) (2006)
(Premiered at Rush Arts Gallery and Resource Center, New York)
In the Fall of 2006 local Puerto Rican reggaetton band Residente Calle 13 released a song protesting the killing of Puerto Rican nationalist (independentista) Filiberto Ojeda Rios. The song was not widely released and was said to be publicized by the then governor of Puerto Rico, Anibal Acevedo-Vila. I met with the band and produced an unauthorized video of the protest song. Although the topic is deadly serious, the video is meant to be ironic, tongue-in-cheek, informative and provocative.
Reviews:
“In his own raucous video, Miguelangel Ruiz wears a mask inspired by Mexican wrestlers (to which he has added a beak and horns) while shadowboxing and dancing to an incendiary (and wildly catchy) song protesting the 2006 killing of a Puerto Rican nationalist by the FBI. Using DIY green-screen technology, Ruiz transfers chops he learned from making comicbooks and paintings to create a layered and ebullient eruption of righteous anger.” -Bob Baker, Village Voice, NY
“Puerto Rican-born Miguelangel Ruiz creates a hybrid comic-heroic character based on his country’s popular culture, as a way of reflecting on his own sense of displacement.” -Nuit Banai, TimeOut New York, NY

"EN MI VIEJO SAN JUAN" An “Un-authorized” Mock Music Video
File Size: 7.6MB (4 minutes 12 seconds) (2006)
by Miguelangel Ruiz
“En Mi Viejo San Juan” by Noel Estrada
(Premiered at Rush Arts Gallery and Resource Center, New York)
"En Mi Viejo San Juan" is a traditional Puerto Rican anthem. It is a theme song for Puerto Ricans that have left the island seeking better lives. It is a sentimental ballad of longing and nostalgia for the loss of a homeland. In this video rendition Awutok-Thon, El Vejigante-Luchador sings to the drama of an imaginary historical loss.
